While playing The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition, some players can’t save their progress after joining a co-op session. This error primarily affects the Client (P2), while the Host’s progress usually saves normally.
If you are also facing this problem, then here is a working fix for you. You can forcefully autosave your progress for both players. You’ll have to do this before ending every multiplayer session. However, the Client must quit first, and the Host must quit last.
How to Save Multiplayer Progress in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North?
Make sure to follow these steps every time after finishing a co-op session.
1. Travel to a Town
Before quitting the session, both players should travel to a safe town or hub.
You can use Bree as an example of a suitable location. Do not quit while you are still out in the middle of a mission.
2. Host Will Save First
The Host (P1) will have to find any merchant in town.
Buy or sell a cheap item, then close the merchant menu.
Now wait for the golden spinning ring to appear on the screen. This is the game’s autosave indicator.
If you see the icon, it means your multiplayer game is saving. Do not quit until the icon appears and disappears.
3. Client Will Save Last
Now the Client (P2) needs to do the same thing.
P2 will talk to a merchant and make a quick transaction. They can buy or sell a cheap item.
Close the merchant menu and wait for the golden autosave icon to appear and disappear.
This step is very important because the Client’s character progression and equipment may not save correctly from the normal multiplayer autosave.
4. The Client Will Quit First
Once both players have confirmed their autosaves, the Client will quit first.
While still in town, the Client will open the pause menu and select:
Quit to Main Menu
Wait until the Client has completely returned to the main menu.
5. The Host Will Quit Last
Only after the Client has safely returned to the main menu, the Host can quit the game.
Do not reverse this order. The Client should always leave first.
Set the Game to Run as Administrator
Windows permissions can also cause problems when the game tries to write or update local save files.
Both players should set the warinthenorth.exe to run as administrator option.
Follow these steps:
- Find warinthenorth.exe in the game folder.
- Right-click on it.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
This will give the game higher Windows permissions when it creates or updates its local save files.
Keep the Same Character During Co-op
The Client should always use one specific character during co-op sessions.
Do not play that character ahead in single-player or change its quest milestones outside the multiplayer sessions.
If you make changes to the character’s progress in single-player, it can cause the game to block that character from saving correctly when they join the co-op session again.
Do Not Use Alt+F4
Do not try to close the game by pressing the Alt+F4 button when you are still in the multiplayer session.
The same applies to abruptly turning off the console or otherwise forcing the game to close.
Always use the proper menu and let the Client quit first. A forced shutdown can delete the latest progress of the Client.
