Food makes a huge difference in Valheim, especially once you start fighting tougher enemies and bosses. You can eat three different foods at the same time, so choosing the right combination gives you the health, stamina, or Eitr you need for the job.
This Valheim food guide covers the food you can unlock from the Meadows to the Deep North, including food stats, ingredients, sources, and the best food combinations. It also covers the meads worth carrying for each boss and where to find the ingredients used in these recipes.
How Food Works in Valheim
You have three food slots, and each slot needs a different food. Eating the same food again doesn’t increase your HP or stamina until the first serving has partly digested. You can then eat it again to restore the full effect and reset its timer.
Food can give you up to four different effects:
- Max HP
- Max Stamina
- HP Regen
- Eitr
Consume food with high HP when you are going into combat. Stamina-heavy foods are better options for building, gathering, exploring, and other activities where you need to move around a lot.
Food effects slowly drop as the timer runs down. At 75% of the timer remaining, you still have 92% of the effect. At 10% remaining, the effect drops to 50%.
You also cannot starve to death in Valheim. However, you’ll become weaker without food, but hunger will not kill you.
What Are Meads?
Meads do not take up your three food slots. You can carry and use them alongside your normal food.
The useful meads are listed later in this guide, including the resistance, healing, stamina, and Eitr options.
Feasts
Feasts are 10-serving dishes made at the Food Preparation Table. You need spices from the Bog Witch to make them, and a Serving Tray to eat them.
They are useful when many players are preparing for the same boss fight.
Bukeperries and Rotten Meat are poisonous. They damage your HP and Stamina, but they also remove your current food buffs. You can use them to reset your food.
Meadows Food
The Meadows are your first real food setup. Hunting deer and boars gives you better health food, while berries, mushrooms, and honey provide more stamina.
Try to keep three different foods active and stay Rested when exploring. The Rested effect makes stamina management much easier.

Best Meads for Valheim
Meads work differently from food.
First brew the base at a Mead Ketill, then put it into a Fermenter to finish the mead.
Fire and Frost resistance meads cut their respective damage type by half for 10 minutes. Poison Resistance Mead also reduces poison damage and its duration.
Resistance effects do not stack with other sources, so you only need one active resistance source.
Healing meads share a cooldown with other healing meads. Stamina meads share a cooldown with other stamina meads, and Eitr meads do the same with other Eitr meads.
For most fights, carry one healing mead and one stamina mead, using the strongest version available to you.
| Mead | Effect | Duration | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Resistance Barley Wine | Fire resistance | 10 min | 10 Barley, 10 Cloudberries |
