Held by a Thread is a hidden achievement in the off-road simulation game Over The Hill. To unlock it, you need to hang from your winch for 10 seconds while your vehicle is completely off the ground.
You can unlock this secret achievement in either the Tassili n’Ajjer Desert in Algeria or Gimli Ridge in Canada. I would recommend Algeria because it is the fastest to reach from the starting area.
Option 1 – Algeria – Tassili n’Ajjer Desert
This is the fastest method to unlock the achievement.
1. Select Algeria
Choose Algeria from the map, then select Tassili n’Ajjer Desert.
2. Equip a Portable Winch
Before you start driving, equip at least one Portable Winch and a Stage 2 or Stage 3 winch.
3. Drive to the Scenic Viewpoint
Spawn at either Porte Du Desert Camp or Crazy Gunther. Drive toward the blue circle marking the Scenic Viewpoint.
4. Deploy the Portable Winch
Press Enter when you reach the Scenic Viewpoint. Select your equipment and deploy the Portable Winch.
5. Attach the Winch and Drive Off the Cliff
Attach your vehicle to the winch, then drive off the cliff so the winch holds your vehicle above the ground.
6. Extend the Winch and Wait
Once your vehicle hangs against the wall, press L (the default key) to extend the winch.
Now let your vehicle dangle completely in the air for 10 seconds. Once done, the Held by a Thread achievement will be unlocked.
Option 2 – Canada – Gimli Ridge
You can also unlock the achievement at Gimli Ridge. This method takes a little longer because you need to drive to the correct spot.
1. Select Canada
Choose Canada, then select Gimli Ridge.
2. Equip Your Winch
Equip at least one Portable Winch and a Stage 3 or Stage 4 winch before heading out.
3. Reach the Rock Bridge
Spawn at either Sunset Landing Cabin or Mount Gibson Lodge and drive toward the blue circle.
4. Collect the Crate
Now you have to search for a rock bridge with a crate on the other side. If you haven’t collected the crate yet, grab it before going from there.
5. Return to the Middle of the Bridge
Drive back to the middle of the rock bridge. This is where you’ll set up the winch.
6. Deploy the Portable Winch
Open your equipment selection and use the Portable Winch.
7. Attach the Winch and Drive Off the Cliff
Attach your vehicle to the winch, then drive off the cliff to hang above the ground.
8. Extend the Winch
Once your vehicle is hanging against the wall, press L (the default key) to extend the winch.
9. Hang for 10 Seconds
Let your vehicle dangle completely in the air for 10 seconds to unlock the Held by a Thread achievement.
Which Option Should You Choose?
I’d recommend the Algeria – Tassili n’Ajjer Desert method. You can reach the required spot quickly, and you don’t need to drive as far as you do in Canada.
Both methods work, including with different vehicles. If you’re working toward all achievements in Over The Hill, this is a quick one to add to your list.
